BIA on Facebook

As you all know, we have moved into an era of social networking where it has become so easy to catch up, get the latest news and share ideas with each other.

We at Born in Africa move with the times and we are also on Facebook. We request that you join us as friends and if you are a BIA godparent send a little message with the name of your godchild. As PR coordinator of BIA I will gladly tag you when your godchild features in a photograph of a camp or a outing.

We update our page almost daily and let all our friends know just what exactly we are up and where we require assistance.

We look forward to linking up with you and thus enabling frequent updates. Visit Facebook and find us at Borninafrica Vzw

Kind Regards

Belinda Coram
Academic Coordinator

Dear Madam/Sir,
We, Henk Koning and Jacqueline Stilmant, will depart on 17 April 2012 to
“Santiago de Compostella”. Our starting point will be from Le Puy en Velay, historic
departure town of the pilgrims who walk the “Santiago de Compostella” on a journey
of 1500 km.
Now that we both are retired, we have the time to do something for those around us
in need who can use our help. We have therefor turned this personal adventure into
a sponsor adventure! With the funds raised on the journey we will be assisting Born
in Africa with their many projects.
Born in Africa (BIA) is a NPO who is activly involved in upliftment
projects in the disadvantaged communities surrounding Plettenberg
Bay, South Africa.
Education is one of the fundamental rights of all children. Therefore, we are committed
to the long term educational development of underprivileged children in South
Africa. A solid education provides solutions for these children to get out of hopeless
situations- often dominated by poverty, abuse, and unemployment. Only when these
children are given the opportunity to obtain a decent education will they have any
hope of entering the labour market.
Visit our blog and take part in our journey!

Local special needs teacher Leigh Dunn had the privilage to spend time with George De Smul, chairman of BIA in Belgium. This is what Leigh had to report back during his visit:
Thank you to Born in Africa for an amazing experience in Europe. Long before even being nominated as a candidate in the National Teaching Awards last year, I decided that I’d love to visit Europe, with the help of Born in Africa. Well, needless to say that both these “dreams”became a reality at roughly the same time, and it coincided with me being invited to speak at schools in Belgium and Holland during the Easter holidays this year, and George de Smul from Born in Africa organising an amazingly fun yet education program in Europe, which I am enjoying right now. I am currently hosted by Joop and Mien Van Sumeren in Holland, and will be off to see Amsterdam this weekend, before heading back to George and Arlette, the parents of Isabelle de Smul Brink – founder of Born in Africa. It was such an honour for me to be invited to attend Born in Africa meetings in Brussels last week, and being asked by Remi de Backer to serve on the BIA committe, which I gladly accepted. I’ve being raising awareness of the work of Born in Africa in schools in Europe through Power Point presentations and a BIA DVD. I’ve also been asked to speak on many occasions about the work I do for children with mental handicaps in South Africa. I find the people in Europe to be open-minded and open-hearted towards the plight of the children in South Africa. Thank you BIA – my greatest highlight was being invited by Georges de Smul to attend a council meeting with the mayor of Brussels, and to visit the home of the King of Belgium, because Brussels is the Capital city of the European Union. I will never be the same after such an enriching trip.
Leigh Dunn – Special Needs teacher and BIA comittee member, and National Teaching Awards winner 2012

It is not often you here children say: “We love Math’s so much, we want to learn more during the school holidays!” Well, this is exactly what 30 Crags Primary Gr 6 and 30 Gr 4 & 5 Kranshoek Primary pupils asked for and got it in the form of the BIA Math Challenge yet again.
Last year’s challenge inspired BIA to host the holiday program and we had such a good response. It is so important to keep the learners occupied positively during the holidays and this is exactly what we did.
Both events were held over a four day period and jam packed with a variety of mathematical hurdles to take on!
Wesley Andrew and his team of motivated facilitators shared this knowledge with the youngsters by means of fun games and treasure hunts which seem to be the solution, after attending a rotating system of 30 minute classes. Well done to all who attended and assisted.
