28 March 2013 - 10-year Celebration!

Our 10-year celebration was a huge success!

School visits

Our godparents and friends had the opportunity to visit the schools we are involved in and many of them met the child they are sponsoring for the first time! Lots of laughs and fun was had with dances and songs being shared and enjoyed. Thank you once again to all our godparents who travelled so far to be here and celebrate this 10-year milestone with us.

Celebration Day Preparation

To start our day, brand new bright green BIA t-shirts were handed out to learners at their schools. Each shirt was individually labelled with a learner’s name and size. Once everyone was dressed, 400 excited Born in Africa children, as well as other participants and members of the team, boarded busses into town. They were dropped off behind the municipality where the buzz of final preparations was already underway.

Getting ready or the street parade

As we waited for everyone to arrive and for 12:00 to come, refreshments were given, banners and balloons were handed out, the marching band got ready and everyone’s voices and bodies were warmed up for the big parade.

The Street Parade

We walked from the Municipality to Piesang Valley Hall. The street parade kicked off with drums, singing and of course a little dancing as accompaniment. A sea of green flooded the main street with smiles and a sense of purpose as we proudly celebrated our 10-year existence. To see everyone walking together as one was unforgettable, evidence of how far Born in Africa has come and the impact we have been able to make so far!

The BIA show

The show was held as part of the celebration. Born in Africa learners, staff, volunteers, godparents, board members, the mayor of Plettenberg Bay and many of our local supporters joined us for the event.

Reception

Finally, our guests were invited to attend a reception which included a champagne toast, snacks and a lovely birthday cake. It was a good close to a day of festivities, celebrating the start of another 10 years of making a difference together! And what would a celebration be without champagne, snacks, good conversation and of course a birthday cake. See our Facebook page for more pictures! BorninafricaVzw
