30 July – Born in Africa Times Table Competition
At BIA, we believe that education is the fundamental right of every child. Mathematical literacy is one of the most neglected facets of educational development in our children. In light of this, BIA decided to inspire learners by organising a fabulous times table competition. All BIA learners in grade 2 – 9 practiced their "times tables" with their mentors as well as in homework classes. The top learners in each age group were selected and competition day finally arrived after months of preparation and in-house competition. Learners were eager to take part, filled with nervous excitement. In the first round they all took a written test and the top three in each age group were selected to go through to the next round where they verbally answered as many questions as possible in 1 minute. Needless to say, the atmosphere was electric!
Prizes and certificates were handed out to those who won first, second and third place, to the learners who showed the greatest improvement and to all other participants to congratulate them on being selected to take part. We also held a fun raffle at the end where learners whom had not received prizes had the chance to win and breaks in between with some refreshments and a light lunch.
Thank you to everyone who made this special event possible. Our participating judges, Janet Harding, Adje Bos, Evangeline Koebert and Dalena Kleinsmidt did a great job at keeping score. We were also joined by Zikisa Bam from Woolworths Plettenberg Bay, who lightened up the atmosphere and inspired the children to keep working hard. To Mrs. Grootboom and Wittedrift High School for accommodating us in the hostel’s study hall, thank you for the perfect venue. Thanks to Jef Michielsen and Plett Sports for sponsoring some great prizes, to Claire’s Cakes for the cupcakes and to Woolworths for the food. And last not but least, thank you to BIA staff for being the driving force behind it all.
